A fraction is a part of a whole. In 1/3, the bottom number 3 (the denominator ) tells how many equal parts the whole was cut into. The top number 1 (the numerator ) tells how many of those parts we took. Cut a chapati into 4 equal parts and take 3 — you have 3/4 of the chapati. The whole matters. Tamanna says 1/3 of one chocolate is bigger than 1/2 of the other, and she is right — her chocolates are different sizes. 1/2 of a 4-square bar is 2 squares; 1/3 of a 9-square bar is 3 squares. To compare two fractions fairly, both must come from the same whole. Then 1/2 is always more than 1/3. Equivalent fractions name the same part with different numbers. Cut a 1/2 piece into 2 equal bits and you get two 1/4 bits, so 1/2 = 2/4. Cut each part into more parts and both numbers grow together: 1/3 =
