Q1.
A minibus has 18 l of fuel left. After refuelling, the fuel meter indicates 65 l. How much fuel has been filled in the fuel tank of the minibus?
Answer
47 litres of fuel was filled.
The tank had 18 l. After filling, the meter shows 65 l. We want the part that was added, so we take the old amount away from the new amount.
Fuel filled = 65 l − 18 l
- Ones: 5 is smaller than 8, so we cannot subtract yet. Regroup — take 1 ten from the 6 tens and break it into 10 ones.
- The tens are now 5 and the ones are 5 + 10 = 15.
- Ones: 15 − 8 = 7.
- Tens: 5 − 1 = 4.
| T | O |
|---|---|
| 5 (was 6) | 15 (was 5) |
| − 1 | 8 |
| 4 | 7 |
Fuel filled = 47 litres
