Q1.
Soak some seeds of whole moong or black or white chana overnight. Next morning, take them out and wrap them in a moist cloth to sprout them. Over the next 4 days, take out one seed each day and measure the length of sprout. Fill the table: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4 — Length of the sprout (in mm).
Number of daysLength of the sprout (in mm)
Day 1
Day 2
Day 3
Day 4
The table as printed on page 62 — write your own measurement in each row.
Answer

Do the activity for four days and write your own numbers in the table. Here is exactly how, and a sample table.

  1. Soak a handful of whole moong overnight in a bowl of water.
  2. Next morning drain the water. Wrap the seeds in a wet cloth. Keep the cloth damp — sprinkle water if it dries.
  3. Each day take out one seed. Do not disturb the rest.
  4. Lay the seed on paper. Mark where the sprout starts and where it ends with a pencil.
  5. Measure between the two marks with your ruler and read it in millimetres. A sprout is small, so millimetres are the right unit.
  6. If the sprout is curly, lay a thread along it, then straighten the thread on the ruler.

Sample answer:

Number of daysLength of the sprout (in mm)Growth since the day before
Day 13 mm
Day 28 mm5 mm
Day 315 mm (1 cm 5 mm)7 mm
Day 424 mm (2 cm 4 mm)9 mm
What to notice: The sprout grows a little more each day, not the same amount every day. On Day 1 it grew 3 mm; by Day 4 it added 9 mm in one day. Your own seed may grow faster or slower — warmth and moisture change everything.
Try this: Grow two seeds — keep one in a warm dark place and one on a cold windowsill. Measure both for four days. Which one grows longer? Write your finding in one sentence.
