Q1.
A farmer weighs a sack of potatoes and finds it to be 10 kg 500 g. If the farmer has 4 such potato sacks, what is the total weight of all the sacks?
Answer
All four sacks together weigh 42 kg.
Four equal sacks means we multiply. There are two ways.
Way 1 — multiply the kg and the g separately, then join.
Multiply the kilograms: 4 × 10 kg = 40 kg.
Multiply the grams: 4 × 500 g = 2,000 g.
2,000 g is 2 whole kilograms, so change it: 2,000 g = 2 kg.
Add the two parts: 40 kg + 2 kg = 42 kg.
Way 2 — change to grams first, then multiply.
10 kg 500 g = 10,500 g 4 × 10,500 = 42,000 g 42,000 g = 42 kg
Four half-kilograms make two whole kilograms — that is where the extra 2 kg comes from.
Why the 500 g matters so much: Four sacks each carry an extra half kilogram. Four halves make two wholes. If you forgot the grams you would answer 40 kg and be short by two full kilograms of potatoes.
Q2.
A box of nuts weighing 4 kg 800 g is equally distributed into 4 smaller boxes. What is the weight of each small box in grams?
Answer
Each small box holds 1,200 g (that is 1 kg 200 g).
Sharing equally means we divide. Again, two ways.
Way 1 — divide the kg and the g separately.
Divide the kilograms: 4 kg ÷ 4 = 1 kg.
Divide the grams: 800 g ÷ 4 = 200 g.
Join them: 1 kg 200 g.
The question asks for grams, so change it: 1 kg 200 g = 1,200 g.
Way 2 — change to grams first.
4 kg 800 g = 4,800 g 4,800 ÷ 4 = 1,200 g (= 1 kg 200 g)
Why Way 1 worked so neatly: both 4 and 800 divide by 4 without any remainder. When they do not divide neatly — say 5 kg 300 g ÷ 4 — use Way 2 and change everything to grams first. Way 2 always works.
Check it yourself: 4 boxes × 1,200 g = 4,800 g = 4 kg 800 g ✓ We are back where we started.
