Every row obeys the same rule: Cost of 1 kg × Quantity = Total Amount. So when one number is missing, use × or ÷ to get it back.

Row 1 — Radish. The total is missing, so multiply.

26 × 78
= 26 × 80 − 26 × 2
= 2080 − 52
= ₹2,028

Row 2 — Potato. The quantity is missing, so divide.

2240 ÷ 20
Cover one zero in each: 224 ÷ 2
= 112 kg
Check: 112 × 20 = ₹2,240 ✓

Row 3 — Cabbage. The total is missing, so multiply.

32 × 56
= 32 × 50 + 32 × 6
= 1600 + 192
= ₹1,792

Row 4 — Green peas. The cost of 1 kg is missing, so divide.

3125 ÷ 125
125 × 20 = 2500, and 3125 − 2500 = 625
125 × 5 = 625
So 20 + 5 = ₹25 per kg
Check: 125 × 25 = ₹3,125 ✓

The last row — add all four totals.

2028 + 2240 = 4268
4268 + 1792 = 6060
6060 + 3125 = ₹9,185
Check the grand total another way: Add the thousands first — 2,000 + 2,000 + 1,000 + 3,000 = 8,000. Then the rest — 28 + 240 + 792 + 125 = 1,185. Together, 8,000 + 1,185 = ₹9,185 ✓

The table is Munshi Lal's sale record — it says what he sold, how much of it, at what rate, and how much money it brought.

Reading the columns from left to right:

  1. S.No. — a serial number, so each item has its own line and none is missed.
  2. Vegetable — the name of the item sold: radish, potato, cabbage, green peas.
  3. Cost of 1 kg — the rate, that is the price of one kilogram.
  4. Quantity supplied (in kg) — how many kilograms of that vegetable went to the mandi.
  5. Total Amount — the money that item brought, found by rate × quantity.
  6. The last row — the money earned from the whole day's sale, found by adding the four totals.
Why a shopkeeper keeps a record like this: With this one page Munshi ji can see which vegetable earned him the most, whether the mandi paid him correctly, and how much he earned this Saturday compared with last Saturday. A bill from any shop carries exactly these same columns.
What earned him the most? Green peas, at ₹3,125. It is not the biggest quantity — that was green peas at 125 kg — but it is also sold at a good rate of ₹25 a kilogram.

ACTIVITY: Ask students to collect bills from shops and read them carefully to identify the information recorded. Discuss in class. Role-play — Students can take turns to be the shopkeeper and issue bills to their customers. Students posing as customers can calculate and pay their bills.

What to do, step by step.

  1. Bring one real bill from home — from the kirana shop, the medical store, the vegetable seller or a restaurant.
  2. Circle these five things on it: the name of the shop, the date, the item names, the rate for each item, and the quantity.
  3. Check the shop's arithmetic yourself: for one line, multiply rate × quantity and see if it matches the amount printed.
  4. Add up all the amounts and see whether your total matches the total printed at the bottom.
  5. For the role-play, one child is the shopkeeper and writes a bill in a table like Munshi Lal's. The customer works out the total and "pays" it.

Sample answer — a bill written during the role-play:

If the customer gives a ₹500 note:
500 − 248 = ₹252 change

What the class should notice in the discussion:

  • Every bill has a rate and a quantity for each item, and the amount is always rate × quantity.
  • The grand total is an addition, not a multiplication.
  • Change is a subtraction: money given − bill amount.
  • Shops sometimes round the total to the nearest rupee. Look for that on your bill.
Tip: Checking a bill is the most useful arithmetic you will do all week. If one line is wrong, point it out politely — shopkeepers make mistakes too.
