Q1.
Walk around your school and create its map. Include the main building, playground, garden, water tanks and other key features. Do not forget the school gate and the pathways that connect the buildings.
Answer

A school map is a drawing of your school as a bird would see it from above. It is not a picture of the building from the front. Everything is drawn as it sits on the ground.

How to make it — 7 steps

  1. Walk the whole school first, without drawing. Go all the way round the boundary, then through the middle. Notice what is where.
  2. Start at the gate. Draw the gate at the bottom edge of your page. Everyone knows where the gate is, so it makes a good starting point.
  3. Draw the biggest thing next. That is usually the main building. Draw it as a rectangle, roughly the right shape.
  4. Add the other big things around it — playground, garden, assembly ground, toilet block, water tanks, kitchen or mid-day-meal shed, bicycle stand.
  5. Join them with the paths. Draw the actual walking routes between the buildings. Do not forget the path from the gate to the assembly ground.
  6. Label everything in clear letters. Add a north arrow — hold your hand out towards where the Sun rises; north is then on your left.
  7. Make a key (legend) in one corner: a green circle for a tree, a blue square for a water tank, a red dot for a fire extinguisher, and so on.

A sample school map. Thick grey lines are the pathways. Yours will look different — that is the point.
Why a map, and not a list: A list tells you what your school has. A map tells you where it is. That is what you need. Once the map is in front of you, you can see that the only dustbin is near the office and there is none near the playground — which is exactly why litter collects there.
Use your map again later: Mark on it, in red, every leaking tap your Water Watchers find. Mark in green every place where a new tree could go. In one look, the class can then see the whole problem and the whole plan.
