What would you do to find the most popular game among Naresh’s and Navya’s classmates?
Answer
Turn the long list into a frequency table. Read the list once, put a tally mark against a game every time a child chooses it, and then count the tally marks.
- Write the different games in one column — kabaddi, hockey, cricket, satoliya (pittu), football, badminton.
- Go down the list name by name. For every child put one mark | against the game they named.
- After four marks draw the fifth across them —
||||— so the marks always come in bundles of five and are easy to count. - Count the marks of each game. That count is the frequency of the game.
- The game with the biggest frequency is the most popular game.

6 + 8 + 6 + 5 + 4 + 2 = 31 students — the whole class is counted, so nobody has been left out or counted twice.
Why the table helps: the raw list has 31 names jumbled together, so the answer cannot be seen in it. The table throws away the names (which we do not need here) and keeps only the game and its count — and every child lands in exactly one row.
