Q1.
Below is the house plan of Charan. It is in a rectangular plot. Look at the plan. What do you notice? Some of the measurements are given. a. Find the missing measurements.
Answer

What we notice first: the whole plot is a rectangle, and every room inside it is a rectangle too. So the rooms in each column must add up to the height of the plot, and the rooms in each row must add up to its width. That is enough to find every missing number.

Step 1 — the width of the plot. The left column (Master Bedroom) is 15 ft wide, the Toilet strip is 5 ft wide and the Kitchen column is 15 ft wide.

Width = 15 + 5 + 15 = 35 ft   (the height 30 ft is given)

Step 2 — go column by column.

Left column: 15 (bedroom) + Small Bedroom + Garden = 30
Small Bedroom: area 180 = 15 × ? → ? = 12 ft
So the Garden strip is 30 − 15 − 12 = 3 ft high

Right column: Utility + 12 (kitchen) + Hall + 3 (parking) = 30 → Utility = 3 ft high
Master Bedroom15 × 15 = 225Small Bedroom15 × 12 = 180Toilet5 × 10 = 50passage5 × 5 = 25Utility15 × 3 = 45Kitchen15 × 12 = 180Hall20 × 12 = 240Garden20 × 3 = 60Parking15 × 3 = 4535 ft30 ftCharan's house — 35 ft × 30 ft = 1050 sq ft
Charan's completed plan. Every room is filled in; the small 5 ft × 5 ft space is the passage joining the toilet to the hall.

Toilet5 ft × 10 ft50 sq ft
Utility15 ft × 3 ft45 sq ft

Parking15 ft × 3 ft45 sq ft
Note: the Hall is 20 ft wide because it stretches across the 5 ft middle strip and the 15 ft right column (5 + 15 = 20). The Garden does the same on the left: 15 + 5 = 20 ft.
Q2.
b. Find out the area of his house.
Answer

The plot is a rectangle 35 ft by 30 ft.

Area of the house = 35 ft × 30 ft = 1050 sq ft

Check by adding the rooms:

225 + 50 + 45 + 180 + 180 + 240 + 60 + 45 = 1025 sq ft
+ the 5 ft × 5 ft passage (25 sq ft) = 1050 sq ft

Also useful later on:

Perimeter of the house = 2 × (35 + 30) = 130 ft
