Q1.
How many whole units are there in 72?
Answer

Two halves make one whole, so group the halves in pairs.

7/2 = (1/2 + 1/2) + (1/2 + 1/2) + (1/2 + 1/2) + 1/2
= 1 + 1 + 1 + 1/2 = 3 + 1/2

Answer: there are 3 whole units in 72 (and one extra half).

Q2.
How many whole units are there in 43 and in 73?
Answer

Three thirds make one whole, so group the thirds in threes.

4/3 = (1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3) + 1/3 = 1 whole + 1/3
7/3 = (3 thirds) + (3 thirds) + 1/3 = 2 wholes + 1/3

Answer: 43 has 1 whole unit; 73 has 2 whole units.

Tip: the number of whole units is simply “how many times the denominator fits into the numerator”. 3 fits once in 4, and twice in 7.
