Figure out the number of whole units in each of the following fractions: a. 83 b. 115 c. 94
Answer
a. 8/3 → 3 + 3 + 2 thirds → 2 whole units and 2/3 left, 8/3 = 2 2/3
b. 11/5 → 5 + 5 + 1 fifths → 2 whole units and 1/5 left, 11/5 = 2 1/5
c. 9/4 → 4 + 4 + 1 quarters → 2 whole units and 1/4 left, 9/4 = 2 1/4

Answer: each of them contains 2 whole units.

Can all fractions greater than 1 be written as such mixed numbers?
Answer

Almost all — but not the ones that are exactly whole numbers.

A mixed number needs two parts: a whole part and a fractional part that is less than 1. If the denominator divides the numerator exactly, nothing is left over.

8/4 = 2 → only a whole part, so it is written simply as 2
9/4 = 2 + 1/4 → written as 2 1/4

So: every fraction greater than 1 whose numerator is not a multiple of its denominator can be written as a mixed number; the rest are whole numbers already.

Write the following fractions as mixed fractions (e.g., 92 = 412): a. 92 b. 95 c. 2119 d. 479 e. 1211 f. 196

Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole part and the remainder becomes the new numerator.
