A picture of the chikki broken into 2 pieces is shown below. How much of the original chikki is each piece?The whole chikki, and the same chikki broken into 2 pieces.
Answer
The whole chikki is thought of as 4 equal quarters. The break gives one small piece and one big piece.
Small piece = 1 quarter = 1/4 chikki
Big piece = 3 quarters = 3 times 1/4 = 3/4 chikki
By dividing the whole chikki into 6 equal parts in different ways, we get 1⁄6 chikki pieces of different shapes. Are they of the same size?
Answer
Yes — they are the same size, even though their shapes are different.
In the first picture the chikki is cut into 6 rectangles; in the second it is cut into 6 triangles. In both cases the whole chikki has been shared into 6 equal parts, so one part is 1⁄6 chikki either way.
The big idea: a fraction measures how much, not what shape. Six equal pieces of the same chikki must each be 1⁄6 of it, whether they are square, rectangular or triangular.
Try This: fold a square sheet into 6 equal parts in two different ways. Cut them and place one piece of each kind on a weighing balance — they balance.
