Observe the features of all the stages of a frog shown in Fig. 10.7. How will you decide the sequence of the given stages (A, B, C, D, E, F)? Some of the stages show distinct changes in their initial and final shapes. Record these changes in Table 10.5.

How to decide the sequence: arrange the stages by how much of the frog's body has been built — start with the one that has no body parts at all and end with the one that has them all.

  1. Find the stage with only eggs — that must be first.
  2. Find the one where the eggs have a dark shape developing inside — that comes next.
  3. Then look for a tail but no legs, then tail with two legs, then tail with four legs, and finally four legs and no tail.
  4. Use the clue printed in the table: D is similar to C but it has two legs. So C must come before D.

Tip: the two easiest anchors are A (only eggs, so first) and E (a complete adult, so last). Fix those two, and the middle four fall into place by counting legs.

Based on the observations listed in Table 10.5, draw the life cycle of a frog. Compare the figure drawn by you with Fig. 10.8.

Draw it as a circle, because the adult frog lays the eggs that start the cycle again. Some stages of Fig. 10.7 are clubbed together — for example, A and F are both put under Stage I.

The four stages, in the book's words:

  1. the egg stage, which progresses to the embryo stage;
  2. the tadpole stage — an early stage with a tail and no legs, and a later stage with hind legs;
  3. the froglet stage;
  4. the adult frog stage.
What the timings tell you: the egg becomes an embryo in 3–4 days and a tadpole in 7–10 days — very fast. But the change from tadpole to froglet takes weeks. Rain-filled ponds do not last long, so the frog rushes through the earliest stages and takes its time only once the tadpole can feed for itself.
