Why it turns: the blades of a firki are folded, so each blade is slanted. Air striking a slanted blade gives it a sideways push. All four blades are pushed the same way round, so the whole firki spins on its pin. When you run, you move through still air — which is the same as air moving past you.
Tip: Use a square of stiff, thin paper 15 cm × 15 cm and do not push the all-pin too tight into the stick. If the pin is tight, the firki will not spin however hard you blow.

What makes a firki rotate?

It is the wind — moving air — that makes a firki rotate.

We cannot see air, but we can see what it does. Air makes the leaves of a tree rustle, clothes on a line sway, and the pages of an open book flutter under a fan. In the same way, moving air pushes the slanted blades of the firki and turns it.

Moving air = wind
Gentle wind = breeze  •  Very fast wind = storm
The big idea: a windmill works exactly like a firki, only much bigger — the wind rotates its wings. Windmills are used to run flour mills, to pull water up from a well and to generate electricity. In a windmill farm, a large number of windmills stand together and generate electricity from the wind.
