Stand safely near a road or in your colony for fifteen minutes and note down every vehicle you see. A filled Table 11.3 looks like this.

Tip: Add a third column of your own — “how many did I count?” Then you can say which fuel is used by the most vehicles in your locality, not just which fuels exist.

What are the most common types of fuels used?
Answer

Petrol and diesel are the two most widely used fuels for vehicles. In most Indian surveys petrol comes first, because two-wheelers outnumber every other vehicle.

Petroleum + natural gas + coal = fossil fuels
  • Petrol — scooters, motorcycles, most cars.
  • Diesel — buses, trucks, tractors, generators.
  • CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) — autos, taxis and city buses; it is a cleaner fuel than petrol or diesel.
  • Electricity — a growing number of e-rickshaws, scooters and cars, which release no smoke at all.
Why this survey matters: almost every vehicle on the list burns a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are found in limited quantities and take millions of years to form — so the more the survey list grows, the sooner the stock runs out and the more the air is polluted.
