Q1.
Let us do our bit to conserve the fossil fuels by— Walking or cycling to nearby places. Using public transport. Suggest some more ways.
Answer
The book gives two. Here are more, grouped by where the saving happens.
| Where | What to do |
|---|---|
| On the road | Share a car or take the school bus (car-pooling); switch off the engine at a red light; keep tyres correctly inflated; service the vehicle on time; drive at a steady speed |
| Choose the vehicle | Prefer CNG or electric vehicles; use the metro or train for long journeys instead of many separate cars |
| At home | Use a pressure cooker; soak dal and rice before cooking; keep the lid on the pan; use a solar cooker and a solar water heater on sunny days; light the gas only after everything is ready |
| Save electricity | Most of our electricity comes from coal — so switching off fans and lights, and using LED bulbs, saves coal |
| Use other sources | Solar panels, wind energy, biogas from cattle dung, hydroelectricity |
| Buy and waste less | Every article we buy took fuel to make and to carry; repairing and reusing saves that fuel |
Why we must: fossil fuels are found in limited quantities, so we will soon run out of them if we keep using them the way we do now. And when they burn, smoke and carbon dioxide are produced, which pollutes the air. Saving fuel therefore does two good things at once.
