Is there any relation between the type of leaf venation and the type of root of the same plant? How do we find this out?
Answer
Yes, there is a clear relation — and the way to find it out is to collect data on many plants and look for a pattern.
The method (this is Activity 2.7):
- Take five or more different plants — the more the better, so that the pattern is not an accident.
- For each plant note two things: the venation of its leaves (reticulate or parallel) and the type of its roots (taproot or fibrous).
- Enter both in one table, side by side, so the pair can be seen at a glance.
- Look at the table and ask: does one type of venation always go with one type of root?

Why we must check many plants: two plants agreeing could be a coincidence. When ten plants out of ten follow the same pairing, we can state it as a general rule. This is exactly the scientific method you learnt in Chapter 1 — observe, guess, test, analyse.
