Why it happens: writing 18 as 18.0 and 0.6 as 0.600 does not change their values, but it keeps every digit in its correct column. Misaligned decimal points are the commonest mistake in this exercise.

17.000 = 16 units + 9 tenths + 9 hundredths + 10 thousandths
Thousandths: 10 – 8 = 2
Hundredths: 9 – 9 = 0
Tenths: 9 – 1 = 8
Units: 16 – 16 = 0
= 0.802
Why it happens: in (d) and (e) the top number has no decimal digits at all, so we write it as 17.000 or 17.00 first. Then a single unit is opened into 1000 (or 100) of the smallest parts, and the subtraction proceeds normally.
Check it yourself: add each answer back to the number that was subtracted. For (h): 5.749 + 0.487 = 6.236 ✓
