Q1.
For the objects shown below, write their lengths in two ways and read them aloud. An example is given for the USB cable. (Note that the unit length used in each diagram is not the same). The length of the USB cable is 4 and 8/10 units or 48/10 units.

Each object is drawn against its own scale, and each scale has every unit cut into 10 equal parts. Read the mark at the far end.

Why it happens: one whole unit is 10 one-tenths. So 4 units = 40 tenths, and 4 units + 8 tenths = 48 tenths. Going the other way, 10910 = 10010 + 910 = 10 + 910.
Check it yourself: the unit length is different in each picture, so do not compare the four objects with one another — compare each one only with its own scale.

Arrange these lengths in increasing order: (a) 9/10 (b) 1 7/10 (c) 130/10 (d) 13 1/10 (e) 10 5/10 (f) 7 6/10 (g) 6 7/10 (h) 4/10

The quickest way is to turn every length into tenths and compare the numerators.

So the answer is

i.e. (h), (a), (b), (g), (f), (e), (c), (d)
Why it happens: once every length is written with the same denominator 10, comparing them is exactly like comparing whole numbers. Notice the trap in (c) and (d): 13010 = 13 while 13 110 = 13110, so (d) is the larger of the two.
