Set the twelve means out in one table and the story becomes clear.

1. The gap between the schools is huge. School B's Grade 6 students average about 150 cm — taller than School A's Grade 8 students. A Grade 6 child in School B is on average 15 cm taller than a Grade 6 child in School A. That is far bigger than any boy–girl difference anywhere in the data.
2. Heights rise with grade in both schools, but differently. School A gains about 7 cm from Grade 6 to Grade 7 and another 7.5 cm from Grade 7 to Grade 8. School B gains about 6 cm from Grade 6 to Grade 7 and then almost nothing from Grade 7 to Grade 8 — its boys' mean is 156.14 in both grades. School B's students seem to have finished most of their growing earlier.
3. Boys versus girls is not settled.
- School A: girls slightly taller in Grade 6 (+3.0 cm) and Grade 7 (+0.03 cm — no real difference at all); boys taller in Grade 8 (+1.5 cm).
- School B: girls slightly taller in Grade 6 (+0.4 cm) and Grade 8 (+0.7 cm); boys slightly taller in Grade 7 (+0.7 cm).
Five of these six differences are under 1.5 cm — smaller than the spread inside any single dot plot.
4. The dot plots show more than the means. In every plot the dots spread over 20 cm or more, so plenty of individual girls are taller than plenty of individual boys in the same grade, whichever mean is higher.
