The lamp glows in only one of the arrangements — the one in which the + terminal of one cell touches the – terminal of the other.

Why it happens: Two cells joined + to – add their pushes, so the current through the filament is strong enough to make it glow. Two cells joined + to + (or – to –) push in opposite directions; their effects cancel and almost no current flows.

When the lamp glows, the cells are in the order shown in Fig. 3.3 — the positive terminal of one cell is connected to the negative terminal of the next cell.

[ –  cell 1  + ]  →  [ –  cell 2  + ]
The free – of cell 1 and the free + of cell 2 become the two terminals of the battery.

Such a combination of two or more cells is called a battery. Fig. 3.3a shows a battery of two cells and Fig. 3.3b a battery of four cells — in every case the same + to – rule is followed.

Did you know? The word battery is also used for a single cell. The single cell that powers a mobile phone is called its battery.
