In a torch, we generally use more than one cell. Are those placed in any particular order?

Yes. They must be placed in a definite order — the positive terminal of one cell touching the negative terminal of the next.
Correct: [– cell +] [– cell +] → the + cap of the first meets the – disc of the second
Wrong: [– cell +] [+ cell –] → two like terminals face each other, and the cells oppose each other

When cells are placed in the correct order the arrangement is called a battery, and the lamp glows. If one cell is turned round, the two cells push current in opposite directions, the effects cancel and the lamp does not glow.
Tip: Look inside the cell compartment of any remote or toy — a small '+' and '–' picture is printed there to show you the correct order.
