Q1.
Does the soil also cool faster than water?
Answer

Yes. If the heated set-up is brought indoors and left for 20 minutes, the thermometer readings show that the soil cools faster than water — just as it got heated faster.

Time after bringing indoorsTemperature of soil (°C)Temperature of water (°C)
0 min4434
10 min3632
20 min3231
Why it happens: water both takes in and gives out a large amount of heat for a small change in temperature; soil does not. So soil warms quickly and loses that warmth quickly, while water changes its temperature slowly in either direction.
Did you know? This is why the air over the sea is warmer than the air over the land at night, and why a land breeze blows from the land towards the sea after dark.
