The same idea carries a different name in almost every Indian language — and often more than one name, depending on whether it is a daily shopping street or a market that appears on a fixed day.

Check it yourself: ask at home for the local word for the market that comes only on one day of the week. That word is usually much older than the word for the shopping street, because periodic markets are the older form.
