Colour and size would not work — two cards can be the same colour but very different shapes. The number of sides also tells us the number of corners, because a shape has as many corners as sides. Another way to sort: by corners — which gives exactly the same three groups. Or by right angles — which puts the square and the rectangle together and everything else apart. Why it happens: Turning a card over or laying it on its side does not change how many sides it has. That is what makes the number of sides a good rule for sorting.
