Both designs are made from the same small shape — a rhombus (diamond).
Here is what to notice:
- Every piece is the same rhombus, only turned in three different ways.
- Three rhombuses meeting at a point look like a box (a cube).
- The two designs use the same pieces in the same places — only the colours are different.
- There are no gaps and no overlaps anywhere.
Why it happens: All the sides of a rhombus are equal, so three of them fit neatly round a point. Our eyes then read the flat picture as a solid box.
Try This: Colour the whole design in one colour. The boxes disappear and you see only flat diamonds.
