Q1.
Jagat's cat sees him sitting on the third desk in the first row. Mark Jagat's position in the picture.
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The classroom drawn as a plan. Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table; in each row the desks are the first, the middle and the third.
Answer
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk Jagat sits here
Jagat’s place marked on the plan of the classroom.

Jagat sits at the third desk of the first row.

Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table.
In that row count the desks: first desk, middle desk, third desk.
The third desk is the last one on the right.
A blue water bottle is kept on that desk.
Why it happens: To find a place we need two things — which row, and which desk in that row. One alone is not enough.
Tip: Put a small cross on that desk in your book, the way the red circle shows it here.
Q2.
Describe the position of the blue bag _____________________.
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The classroom drawn as a plan. Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table; in each row the desks are the first, the middle and the third.
Answer
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The blue bag, circled on the plan of the classroom.

The blue bag is kept on the first desk of the first row.

The bag is in the same row as Jagat → Row 1.
It is on the very first desk on the left → first desk.
So: Row 1, first desk — two desks away from Jagat.
Why it happens: Saying “the blue bag is there” does not help anybody. Saying the row and the desk tells the exact place.
Q3.
What do you see on the middle desk of the second row? _____________________.
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The classroom drawn as a plan. Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table; in each row the desks are the first, the middle and the third.
Answer
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The middle desk of the second row, circled on the plan of the classroom.

On the middle desk of the second row there is a red water bottle.

Second row → the middle row of the three rows.
Middle desk → the desk between the first desk and the third desk.
On it stands a red water bottle with a green cap.
Why it happens: Counting the row first and the desk next takes you to one desk only, so there is just one answer.
Q4.
Where is the notebook kept — the first desk in the second row or the middle desk in the third row?
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The classroom drawn as a plan. Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table; in each row the desks are the first, the middle and the third.
Answer
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The desk on which the notebook lies, circled on the plan of the classroom.

The notebook is kept on the middle desk in the third row.

Third row → the row nearest to us, farthest from the teacher’s table.
Middle desk of that row → the girl resting her head there.
The notebook lies open beside her. → middle desk, third row
The first desk in the second row is empty.
Why it happens: Two names were given for one notebook. Only one place can be right, so we check both places on the picture and pick the one that has the notebook.
Q5.
Draw an apple on the third desk of the second row.
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
The classroom drawn as a plan. Row 1 is the row nearest the teacher’s table; in each row the desks are the first, the middle and the third.
Answer
teacher’s table cat Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 first desk middle desk third desk
An apple drawn on the third desk of the second row.

Find the desk first, then draw.

Second row → the middle row.
Third desk → the last desk on the right of that row.
Draw the apple on that desk.
Why it happens: The row number and the desk number together point at exactly one desk, so everybody in the class draws the apple in the same place.
Try this: Ask a friend to name a desk and you draw a star on it. Then change turns.
