In a big aquarium, Jolly fish sees 72 legs of octopuses. How many octopuses are there in the aquarium?
Answer

There are 9 octopuses in the aquarium.
One octopus has 8 legs, so we find 72 ÷ 8. 5 octopuses use 5 × 8 = 40 legs. 72 − 40 = 32 legs left. 4 octopuses use 4 × 8 = 32 legs. 32 − 32 = 0 legs left. Total = 5 + 4 = 9 octopuses Check: 9 × 8 = 72 ✓
Why it happens: Each octopus takes away one group of 8 legs, so the number of groups of 8 inside 72 is the number of octopuses.
Q2.
A sports store packs 4 shuttlecocks in a bigger box. They have 50 shuttlecocks. How many boxes will they need to pack all of them? Can they pack all the shuttlecocks in the boxes? How many are left?
Answer
Boxes of 4 shuttlecocks each.
12 boxes get filled and 2 shuttlecocks are left over.
No, they cannot pack all of them in full boxes. The 2 left over need one more box, which will not be full.
Why it happens: 50 is not made of whole groups of 4. After 12 whole groups, 2 are left over — that leftover is the remainder.

Rakul Chachi uses a part of her farm to grow flowering plants for the upcoming festive season. She has planted 75 saplings of roses. Each row has 5 saplings. How many rows of saplings has she planted?
