100 bikes with 2 people on each have 100 × 2 people = _____ people. 200 bikes with 2 people on each have ______ people. How did you find it?
Answer
100 bikes with 2 people on each.
100 bikes: 100 × 2 = 200 people
200 bikes = 100 bikes + 100 bikes
200 × 2 = 200 + 200 = 400 people

How did we find it? We doubled the answer for 100 bikes, because 200 bikes are two hundreds of bikes.

Why it happens: Each extra hundred bikes brings another 200 people, so the count grows in steps of 200.
Q2.
100 cars with 4 people in each have 100 × 4 people = _______ people. 500 cars with 4 people in each have ______ people. How did you find it?
Answer
100 cars with 4 people in each.
100 cars: 100 × 4 = 400 people
500 cars = five lots of 100 cars
500 × 4 = 400 + 400 + 400 + 400 + 400 = 2000 people

How did we find it? 5 × 4 = 20, and hundred-times 20 is 2000.

Why it happens: 500 groups are 100 times as many as 5 groups, so the answer is 100 times as big and two zeros join at the end.

Why it happens: The group size stays 4. Only the number of groups grows, and it grows in tens and hundreds, so zeros are added to the answer.

What do you notice about multiplying by multiples of 100s?

We work out the small fact first, then join two zeros at the end.

3 × 4 = 12  →  300 × 4 = 1200
5 × 4 = 20  →  500 × 4 = 2000
2 × 3 = 6  →  200 × 3 = 600
Why it happens: 300 groups are a hundred times as many as 3 groups. Hundred-times moves every digit two places to the left, so two zeros appear in the ones and tens places.
