Q1.
What are some of the ways by which we can take care of nature and our neighbourhood? List a few.
Answer

We take care of nature and our neighbourhood by doing small things, again and again.

  1. Plant saplings and keep watering them until they grow, as the children did on Van Mahotsav.
  2. Do not break branches or pluck flowers and leaves without reason.
  3. Throw waste only into a dustbin, and keep dry waste and wet waste in separate bins.
  4. Put leaves and food waste into a pit. They become manure and improve the soil.
  5. Close the tap while brushing, and repair a leaking tap at once.
  6. Switch off lights and fans when you leave the room.
  7. Carry a cloth bag to the market instead of bringing home a plastic one.
  8. Keep a bowl of water for birds in summer, and do not disturb their nests.
  9. Tell an elder about a broken street light, an overflowing bin or a leaking pipe.
  10. Join a cleanliness drive in your park or lane with your friends.
Why it works: Nature and the neighbourhood belong to everyone. One child watering one plant looks like a very small act — but thirty children watering thirty plants turn a bare park into a green one.
Q2.
How does helping others and working together make our community better?
Answer

Working together makes a community better in four clear ways.

  1. The work finishes faster. The park in the story was ready "in no time", and the people of Kanker built their bridge in only two days.
  2. Everyone can give something. Sameer had wood and nails, Babita could mend the street light, Noor had saplings in her plant nursery. Nobody had everything, but together they had enough.
  3. Nobody is left out. Because the children cleaned the park and planted trees, Mallika's grandmother and her friends now enjoy their morning walk and get better air to breathe.
  4. People become friends. After the hard work, the whole village sat down to a community feast, with jokes, laughter and delicious food.
Why it happens: Helping others turns many separate families into one team. In Sikkim, people who are specialists in agriculture, called Khetala, come together at harvest time. The crops get cut easily, and a sense of bond grows among the people.
