About this chapter
A community is the people who live near one another and share the same places. In Chandan's village everybody uses the playground, the road, the shops and the well. The elders meet under the big banyan tree at the corner of the playground. Public places belong to everyone. Parks, schools, markets, playgrounds, roads and bus stops are used by all of us — for playing, relaxing and meeting others. People also come together to clean and decorate them on special days, and these shared days make beautiful memories. Van Mahotsav is the tree-planting festival. It is celebrated every year in India in the rainy season, from 1 July to 7 July. People plant trees to protect the environment and make the earth greener. Work becomes light when it is shared.
