Why this is the answer: the hospital is drawn above Navya’s home, so it is to the north. The chemist is on the right, so it is to the east. The bakery is on the left, so it is to the west. The post office is below, so it is to the south.
How Navya worked it out: she watched where the sun rose and marked that side as east. Then she drew the other places around her house.
Note about the book: in the English edition the house in the middle has no name board, so you must work out from the question that it is Navya’s home. The Hindi edition labels the same house “नव्या का घर”.
Q2.
Look at the picture on the next page, and imagine your school at the centre. Name the buildings or areas near your school and write the direction they are situated in the given spaces.The picture printed on the next page: your school in the middle, with a blank space in each of the four directions.

This is about your own school, so first find out which way is which.
Stand outside your school gate in the morning and face the rising sun. You are now facing east.
North is then on your left, south on your right and west behind you.
Look around and name one place you can see in each direction.
Write each name in the box on that side of the school.

Why the sun helps: the sun always rises in the east. Once you know east, the other three directions follow at once.
Tip: your answer will be different from this one, because your school stands in a different place. Just be sure each place really is on that side.

Imagine you are giving directions to a friend to visit your favourite place near your school. How would you explain it using directions (left, right, forward, backward, etc.) and landmarks? Place: ___________ Instruction: ___________
Answer
Good directions have two things in every step: which way to turn and a landmark to look for.
Start from a place your friend already knows, such as the school gate.
Give one step at a time. Say how far to go and what to look for.
Name a landmark at every turn — a big tree, a temple, a red postbox, a bus stop.
End by saying what the place looks like, so your friend knows it on sight.
Sample answer: Place: The public park near my school. Instruction: Come out of the school gate and turn right. Walk straight past the bakery. At the red postbox on the corner, turn left. Walk forward till you see the bus stop. The park is just behind the bus stop. It has a big neem tree and a blue gate.
Why landmarks matter: road names are hard to find, but a big tree or a postbox can be seen from far. A landmark tells your friend that they are on the right path.
