Write a letter to a friend and post it.
Answer

Here is how to write the letter and post it.

  1. Take a clean sheet of paper. Write the date in the top right corner.
  2. Begin with Dear … and your friend’s name.
  3. Write four or five lines of your own news. Then ask about your friend.
  4. End with Your friend, and sign your name below it.
  5. Fold the letter and put it in an envelope.
  6. Write your friend’s full address with the PIN code in the middle of the envelope. Write your own address on the back.
  7. Stick a postage stamp in the top right corner.
  8. Drop the envelope into the red postbox.

What happens next. The postman opens the postbox and takes the letters to the post office. There the letters are sorted region by region. Then they are sent to their destinations. Your letter reaches your friend in a few days.

Dear Ritu,
How are you? I am well. Our school library got new picture books this week. I read one about a girl who draws maps.
My grandfather and I came home by bus yesterday. We saw a red postbox on the corner. That is why I am writing to you!
Please write back and tell me about your new school.

On the visit, watch what each person at the post office does. Then write it down.

  1. Carry a small notebook and a pencil.
  2. Stand quietly at the counter and watch for a few minutes.
  3. Ask the postmaster one or two polite questions.
  4. Write down everything you saw before you forget it.

Things you will see at a post office

  • A counter where stamps are sold.
  • A weighing machine for parcels.
  • A rubber seal that stamps the date on each letter.
  • Racks or bags in which letters are sorted, place by place.
  • Postmen sorting letters for their own area.
  • A speed post and parcel counter.
  • A money order form and a savings counter.
Sample answer: We visited the post office near our school. The clerk sold us a stamp for five rupees. He weighed a parcel on a machine and wrote the cost on it. A postman was putting letters into different bags. Each bag had the name of a place on it. The postmaster told us that the post office also sends money by money order.
Why it matters: a post office does much more than carry letters. It sends parcels, documents and even money.
