Things arranged in a pattern can be counted block by block, pile by pile or line by line. That is quicker and safer than counting one by one. Shiv laid his coins out two by two with none left over. Numbers that pair off fully are called even numbers . Shirley’s coins always left one coin alone. Numbers that leave one out are called odd numbers . To tell them apart, look only at the ones digit . If it is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 the number is even. If it is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 it is odd. Counting numbers go even, odd, even, odd … for ever. So the two neighbours of any number are always of the other kind. From 1 to 100 there are 50 even numbers and 50 odd numbers — exactly the same many of each.
