9 boats have to ferry 108 people waiting along the banks of the Cauvery River. Every boat carries the same number of people. How many people should be ferried in each boat?
Answer
9 boats on the Cauvery, carrying the same number of people each.
Each boat should carry 12 people.
108 people shared equally in 9 boats → 108 ÷ 9 Put 5 people in each boat: 9 × 5 = 45 people seated. 108 − 45 = 63 left. Put 5 more in each boat: 9 × 5 = 45 people seated. 63 − 45 = 18 left. Put 2 more in each boat: 9 × 2 = 18 people seated. 18 − 18 = 0 left. Each boat has 5 + 5 + 2 = 12 people Check: 9 × 12 = 108 ✓
Why it happens: This is a sharing problem — we know the number of boats, not the size of each group. So we keep seating the same number in every boat until nobody is left.
