About this chapter

Stanza 1 — the game begins. “In the playground, we gather around, / With a stick and a small gilli to throw, / Gilli Danda, our game is so sound! / We play with joy, watch it go!” The children come together in an open playground. They need only two things — a long stick and a small piece of wood. Here sound does not mean a noise. It means good and strong . So the line means, “our game is a really fine game”. Stanza 2 — the swing and the friends. “One, two, three, swing and hit, / With our friends, we never quit! / With every swing, we feel so free, / Oh, what fun it is, you see!” The counting one, two, three is what children really say before a big hit. Quit means to stop or to give up. The players never give up, and every swing of the danda makes them feel free. Stanza 3 — the gilli flies
